Building 4 Odyssey
Building 4 Odyssey I very much agree with what Jess wrote about your comments on Stus entry this is a challenging time for the MIT admissions office, and hearing your thoughts, whether supportive or critical, is always enlightening. As I wrote back in February, Im reading three heavy-duty books in the class 21L.702 Studies in Fiction: James Joyce and the Legacy of Modernism. Joyces Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man were both difficult but possible to understand. I really enjoyed both of them, and am fairly confident that I knew what was going on in each book. I havent often feel this way at MIT, so I was enjoying it. Ulysses is something else. It is the most formidable piece of literature I have ever attempted, and, not gonna lie, its been rough. Between the changing narrative styles, extensive vocabulary (250,000 words from a vocabulary of 30,000 words), and hundreds of jokes/puns/foreign phrases that require 700 pages of annotations, it is a monster to read let alone understand. But enough complaining. I am in a superb lit class that is tackling this book, and I diligently take pages of notes each class to supplement my reading comprehension. All good, right? Not last Tuesday, when I left my copy of Ulysses, along with my awesome notebook of class notes from Dubliners, Portrait, and Ulysses in the Building 4 Athena Cluster. I rushed out of the cluster around 5:15 PM when I got an urgent email, and forgot to bring my books with me. When I went back around 8:00 PM to pick them up, they were gone. Yikes. On Wednesday morning, after a sleepless night (not kidding), I went to the undergraduate math office in the same hallway and asked if anyone had dropped off my books. Nope. I then left a short note in the unlucky terminal that said, If you found a brown notebook or the book Ulysses, please contact [email], thanks! By Thursday, I was pretty bummed, since I figured that if the person who took my books hadnt contacted me within a day, they were as good as gone. With my last drop of optimism, I turned to the Athena gods. My awesome friend Phil 07 taught me the useful Athena command last. I typed this in on the Athena computer I had used Tuesday and learned the names of the last ~40 people who had logged in on the same computer. I emailed the following message to the 3 users who were there between 5:15 PM and 8:00 PM Tuesday Hey [Name], I left my copy of Ulysses by James Joyce in the bldg 4 Athena cluster, and I see you logged on after me. Did you happen to pick my book and notebook? If so, I'd be happy to come get it from you Thanks, Mitra I got some very thoughtful responses, like Hi Mitra, I'm afraid I haven't seen it. Good luck and Hi Mitra, Sorry, I was actually in a rush to print something out, I didn't even notice anything on the table. Sorry again! I hope you find it At this point, I was beginning to lose all hope. Buying a new book wouldnt have been a huge deal, especially since I dont write much in my books, but the notebook was key. Then I miraculously received this email Yes, I did! Sorry, I picked up the book and notebook intending to find out who owned them, but I got distracted. I have a big thermodynamics test today which has left me scatterbrained. The test has got me jammed up today, and it would be hard for us to meet up. Can we meet Friday? Any time or place Friday is good for me. I'm sorry for the inconvenience I've caused; I should have just left the books there and in all likelihood you'd have recovered them by now. Anyway, email me back and let's find a time and place to meet up and get/give back your stuff. As you may have guessed, I was thrilled to get this email and am currently guarding my Ulysses book and notebook with my life. I am not sure what the moral of this story is, though I suppose it can be any one of the following: keep track of your stuff; learn your Athena commands; people at MIT can do great things for each other. Any others that Im missing? In any case, Im off to reread and Scylla and Charybdis to try and figure out what Stephen Dedaluss deal is.

Issues Affecting The Healthcare Sector - 1773 Words
There are many issues affecting the healthcare sector in this day and age. Some of these issues include the cost of healthcare and the rise of it, the quality or efficiency of healthcare, or the shortage of physicians. All of these issues directly affect patient care and can be avoided with proper standards and practice. However, in 2015, there is no other issue directly affecting patients, in terms of patient privacy and willingness to come back to a certain entity, more than identity theft. Background and Why Healthcare Records? Some do not understand the power a medical record can hold in the hands of criminals in the black market. Since credit card numbers can easily be shut off when it is identified as compromised, health care recordsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦New York times state that around 4.5 million healthcare records were potentially compromised and occurred in April of 2014 (Perlroth, 2014). In terms of cyber-attacks, this is a fairly new subject area for healthcare. Now, there have been smaller attacks on healthcare due to their value, but in terms of large scale cyber-attacks, it is a fairly recent occurrence. However, it is important to note that massive healthcare breaches do not only come from the outside. There are healthcare employees involved in the stolen information as well. It is very easy for individuals with enough access to medical records to steal information or pass it on to someone else without being noticed because accessing data is seen to be in their job role. For instance, if a nurse accesses a patient record and writes down his or her social security number and date of birth, no one would think twice about it unless the nurse was seen. This is because the accessibility of the medical records was what her job entailed on a daily basis. Why donââ¬â¢t Healthcare Companies Simply Stop Criminals from Breaking into their Systems? Some of the reasons why these attacks occur is simply the lack of response from the healthcare entities. There are many things healthcare companies should be doing in terms of better security for their patientsââ¬â¢ information. Some healthcare entities are not using certain security

Schools and Nutrition Policy Essay - 1886 Words
Melissa Rossiter, currently an Assistant Professor in Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University and a Registered Dietician, conducted a descriptive study through the means of a questionnaire in 2007. This questionnaire, distributed to 130 prospective teachers, was intended to measured their ââ¬Å"eating patternsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"nutrition knowledgeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"personal health beliefsâ⬠as well as the ââ¬Å"schoolââ¬â¢s food environmentâ⬠, and the contribution these measures had on intended food practices in the classroom. The author noted this, explaining that the current views of prospective teachers may not be representative of them once beco ming a working teacher.. The associations identified can be difficult to predict because one cannot determine causality using a cross-sectional design. To determine causation of classroom food practices, a longitudinal study is more appropriate. The most relevant finding is that the lower the prospective teacherââ¬â¢s beliefs that the schools food environment is responsible for promoting healthy foods, the higher the likelihood of them to use rewards such as candy in the classroom. This finding does not reply to the objective of this research. The authorââ¬â¢s intention is to determine whether the schools food environment (atmosphere, attitudes towards food, and types of food available) will influence the prospective teacherââ¬â¢s classroom food practices. This particular finding explores the effect on the prospective teacherââ¬â¢s classroom food practices, contingent of their high or low opinion of the obligations schools have to encourage healthy food choices. The stud y had two prominent strengths. First, this particular study uses a questionnaire derived from a previous similar study, so it has been ââ¬Å"verifiedâ⬠. Fact Sheet on Effects of Marijuana on the Body Free Essays
MEMORY/PERCEPTION/BEHAVIOR 1. Attention, memory and learning are impaired among heavy marijuana users, even after users discontinued its use for at least 24 hours. Heavy marijuana use is associated with residual neuropsychological effects even after a day of supervised abstinence from the drug. We will write a custom essay sample on Fact Sheet on Effects of Marijuana on the Body or any similar topic only for you Order Now Heavy users displayed significantly greater impairment than light users on attention/executive functions, as evidenced particularly by greater preservations on card sorting and reduced learning of word lists. These differences remained after controlling for potential confounding variables, such as estimated levels of premorbid cognitive functioning, and for use of alcohol and other substances in the two groups. However, the question remains open as to whether this impairment is due to a residue of drug in the brain, a withdrawal effect from the drug, or a frank neurotoxic effect of the drug. (ââ¬Å"The Residual Cognitive Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use in College Students,â⬠Pope, HG Jr. , Yurgelun-Todd, D. , Biological Psychiatry Laboratory, McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA, JAMA February 21, 1996. 2. Impaired memory for recent events, difficulty concentrating, dreamlike states, impaired motor coordination, impaired driving and other psychomotor skills, slowed reaction time, impaired goal-directed mental activity, and altered peripheral vision are common associated effects. (Adams and Martin 1996; Fehr and Kalant 1983; Hollister 1988a; Institute of Medicine 1982; Tart 1971) 3. A roadsid e study of reckless drivers who were not impaired by alcohol, showed that 45% of these drivers tested positive for marijuana. Dr. Dan Brookoff, published in the New England Journal of Medicine) 4. Marijuana smoking affects the brain and leads to impaired short-term memory, perception, judgment and motor skills. (Marijuana Facts: Parents Need to Know, National Institute on Drug Abuse ) 5. In a survey of 150 marijuana using students, 59% surveyed report they sometimes forget what a conversation is about before it has ended. 41% report if they read while stoned they remembered less of what they had read hours later. (Dr. Richard Schwartz, Vienna Pediatric Associates in Psychiatric Annals as reported in NIDA Capsules) NEUROBIOLOGICAL EFFECTS 6. Marijuana activates the same pleasure centers in the brain that are targeted by heroin, cocaine and alcohol. (Dr. Gaetano Di Chiara, University of Caligari, Italy) CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS 7. Physiological effects of marijuana include an alteration of heart rate. Use of marijuana may result in intense anxiety, panic attacks or paranoia. (National Institute of Drug Abuse) CHRONIC EFFECTS RESPIRATORY SYSTEM EFFECTS . The daily use of 1 to 3 marijuana joints appears to produce approximately the same lung damage and potential cancer risk as smoking 5 times as many cigarettes. (UCLA) The study results suggest that the way smokers inhale marijuana, in addition to its chemical composition, increases the adverse physical effects. The same lung cancer risks associated with tobacco also apply to marijuana users, even though they smoke far less. (reported in NIDA Capsules) 9. Benzopyrene is the chemical in tobacco that causes lung cancer. An average marijuana cigarette contains nearly 50% more benzopyrene than a tobacco cigarette. An average marijuana cigarette contains 30 nanograms of this carcinogen compared to 21 nanograms in an average tobacco cigarette (Marijuana and Health, National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine Report, 1982) Benzopyrene suppresses a gene that controls growth of cells. When this gene is damaged the body becomes more susceptible to cancer. This gene is related to half of all human cancers and as many as 70% of lung cancers. 10. Marijuana users may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers have, such as chronic bronchitis and inflamed sinuses. (Marijuana Facts: Parents Need to Know, National Institute on Drug Abuse ) 11. Marijuana smokers, when compared to non marijuana smokers, have more respiratory illness. (Polen et al. 1993). 12. Marijuana smoke produces airway injury, acute and chronic bronchitis, lung inflammation, and decreased pulmonary defenses against infection. Smoking one marijuana cigarette leads to air deposition of four times as much cancer-causing tar as does tobacco smoke (Dr. D. Tashkin, Western Journal of Medicine) ENDOCRINE SYSTEM EFFECTS 13. Heavy marijuana use can affect hormones in both males and females. Heavy doses of the drugs may delay the onset of puberty in young men. Marijuana also can have adverse effects on sperm production. Among women, regular marijuana use can disrupt the normal monthly menstrual cycle and inhibit the discharge of eggs from the ovaries. (Marijuana Facts: Parents Need to know, National Institute on Drug Abuse) ADVERSE MENTAL EFFECTS 14. An ââ¬Å"amotivational syndromeâ⬠can develop in heavy, chronic marijuana users. It is characterized by decreased drive and ambition, shortened attention span, poor judgment, high distractibility, impaired communication skills, and diminished effectiveness in interpersonal situations. (National Institute of Drug Abuse) 15. Adults who smoked marijuana daily believed it helped them function better, improved self-awareness and improved relationships with others. However, researchers found that users were more willing to tolerate problems, suggesting that the drug served as a buffer for those who would rather avoid confronting problems than make changes that might increase their satisfaction with life. The study indicated that these subjects used marijuana to avoid dealing with their difficulties and the avoidance inevitably made their problems worse. Although users believed the drug enhanced understanding of themselves, it actually served as a barrier against self-awareness. (case studies by research team from Center for Psychosocial Studies in New York. ) IMMUNE SYSTEM EFFECTS 16. Marijuana and some of its compounds influence the immune system and affect the bodyââ¬â¢s ability to resist viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa, and decreases the bodyââ¬â¢s anti tumor activities. Marijuana has the potential to alter the backup safeguards of the immune system because it affects diverse types of cells in the body. This could compromise the immune systemââ¬â¢s ability to screen out cancer cells and eliminate infection. (Dr. Guy A. Cabral, Professor, Medical College of Virginia, speaking at NlDAââ¬â¢s National Conference on Marijuana Use: Prevention, Treatment and Research. ) Limitations of Marijuana Research ââ¬Å"Unfortunately, much of what is known about the human pharmacology of smoked marijuana comes from experiments with plant material containing about 2% THC or less, or occasionally up to 4% THC. In addition, human experiments typically are done in laboratory settings where only one or two smoked doses were administered to relatively young, medically screened, healthy male volunteers well experienced with the effects of marijuana. Females rarely participated in past marijuana research because of prohibitions (now removed) against their inclusion. Thus the clinical pharmacology of single or repeated smoked marijuana doses given to older people or to people with serious diseases has hardly been researched at all in a controlled laboratory or clinic setting. Some of the very few reports of experiments that have included older or sicker people, particularly patients less experienced in using marijuana suggest the profile of adverse effects may differ from healthy student volunteers smoking in a laboratory experiment (Hollister, 1986a, 1988a) THC administered alone in its pure form is the most thoroughly research cannabinoid. Much of what has been written has been inferred from the results of experiments using only pure THC. Generally, in experiments actually using marijuana, the assumed dose of marijuana was based only on the concentration of THC in the plant material. The amounts of cannabidiol and other cannabinoids in the plant also vary so that pharmacological interactions modifying the effects THC may occur when marijuana is used instead of pure THC. The result of this research strategy is that a good deal is known about the pharmacology of THC, but experimental confirmation that the pharmacology of a marijuana cigarette is indeed entirely or mainly determined by the amount of THC it contains remains to be completed. The scientific literature contains occasional hints that the pharmacology of pure THC, although similar, is not always the same as the clinical pharmacology of smoked marijuana containing the same amount of THC (Graham 1976, Harvey 1985, Institute of Medicine 1982)â⬠(Report to the Director, National Institutes of Health, by the Ad-Hoc Group of Experts, ââ¬Å"Workshop on the Medical Utility of Marijuana. ââ¬Å") How to cite Fact Sheet on Effects of Marijuana on the Body, Essay examples

Why American Veterans Should Be Honored free essay sample
WarI think American veterans should be honored for several key reasons. The first and foremost reason is that these brave men and women risked ther lives for the freedom of the United States, or even for the freedom of a country half way around the world, which they knew nothing about. Either way these soilders fought for freedom, and each one should be honored one way or another. Another reason veterans should be commended is because we never want to repeat the time when Vietnam war veterans came back to the states. They were treated terribly. They were spit on, objects were thrown at them, they were denied of jobs by people who resented the war, etc. Yet another reason is that these people fight so the rest of us dont have to. These people also keep the wars over seas, so us citizens can sleep safely at night. Also, some soilders see some really traumatizing things. We will write a custom essay sample on Why American Veterans Should Be Honored or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Either seeing their buddies die right in front of them. Anyone who has seen Saving Private Ryan has a pretty good idea of what some soilders witness. As mentioned before, every single veteran should be honored, no matter how little or how much he or she has done. This means that the United States Marine Corp. Commandant should have the same honor as a Navy Engineer who has never seen a day of fighting. Here are a few ways that us Americans can honor those who serve our country. One way is to find a veteran in your community, and listen to their war time stories. Youll never know if a great American hero lives in your neighborhood if you dont ask. Another way, although less likely to happen nowadays, is if you ever see a homeless person with a sign saying that he or she was a veteran of some sort, go ahead and drop some loose change into their Spaghetti-Os can. One last way is to just send a simple letter to a soilder currently in Iraq or Afghanistan, to get the spirits up. And that is why I think American Veterans should be honored. No matter if they fought in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, or even the current War on Terror, these soilders deserve the respect of each and every American citizen.

How did Africans preserve and affirm their way of life and use their i
How did Africans preserve and affirm their way of life and use their i Chinara Ume Intro to African American Studies 2nd Framing Question Dr. Carr February 18, 2016 How did Africans preserve and affirm their way of life and use their identities as a means to resist enslavement? Abstract: At the time of the eighteenth and ninth century, most Africans were learning how to resist slavery and how to form in unity in their actions and thoughts. Africans back then were forced, as soon as they came to America, to lose their traditions and adopt the American way. However, they eventually learned the techniques of resistance from white people in the United States and Western Hemisphere. And the techniques they learned they used against the white people who enslaved them. Although when they tried to resist, there were serious against repercussions Africans, sometimes resulting in death. Critical Review of Scholarship: In the novel, The Eloquence of the Scribes, Ayi Kwei Armah explains the importance of knowing your African history. He also talks about how, in terms of literacy, of passing knowledge down to younger generations. Armah said, Textual references to this aspect of mass identity are therefore scare, but that is not to say they are absent (Armah). He used to use literature as a way of better understanding where he cam from and his culture. His discussions points made it clearer to me to realize where I came from. In order to know where I came from, I have to make use of the resources that are given to me. If I do not use what is around me, I will not know where I came from. Discussion: In order to answer the framing question, I begin to address some of the topics presented by Dr. Carr in his lecture. He makes it a point to discuss what it means being African. Usually, when thinking of being African not many things come to mind; however, Dr. Carr stressed the importance of being African. When the majority people think of Africans, they think of slaves, but that is certainly not the only thing that Africans are. There are many advantages of being African. Africans are very intelligent, intelligent enough as they can seriously contribute to global advancement. During the enslavement period, Africans affirmed their way of living in different ways. Firstly, Africans never gave up their names and never succumbed to the white names their masters tried to give them. This helped them to sometimes keep their culture, however, it also resulted in punishment because it was a form of rebellion. They also tried to keep their traditions to preserve their culture. They passed down stories and the stories described a sense of confidence of Africans and reminded them that they were always great. Further Questions: 1.Where do African names stem from? 2.Is it possible to find what part of Africa you are from through DNA testing?
